Girlfriends – what does it mean to network?

By definition, it means a group of people who exchange information, contacts, and experience for professional or social purposes.  However, you can ask 20 people what networking is, and you will get 20 answers.  

Networking is a mutually beneficial relationship for all parties involved. Both parties should build, reinforce, and maintain a trustworthy relationship to further reach their goals.  It is a relationship where someone would do you a favor and you would gladly return the favor. 

What should you do when you attend a networking function? First start with a purpose. What are you trying to accomplish at the event? Determine your goal before you walk in the door. Is there a particular person you are trying to meet?  Do you want to meet three new people who will schedule another meeting with you? Going to a networking meeting with no end in mind is useless, so set your goal so you can make it worthwhile.
